RFC Registration · For foreigners in Mexico

Your RFC, Handled Start to Finish

The RFC (Registro Federal de Contribuyentes) is Mexico's taxpayer ID — you need it to be invoiced, to run a business, and to stay compliant with Mexican tax authority (SAT). For foreigners it comes with extra steps. We do those steps with you.

The Process, In Order

Have your residency status in order

The RFC for foreigners is tied to your immigration status: temporary or permanent resident card (Canje/Canjeado). Tourists cannot get an RFC — if you are planning to move, start with the visa.

Get your CURP first

The CURP (Clave Única de Registro de Población) is Mexico's unique population key — a foreigner gets it after the residency card is issued. No CURP, no RFC. We check it and request corrections if the data is wrong.

Register with SAT (in person or online)

New foreigner registrations require a SAT appointment (pre-registered online). You bring your passport, residency card, CURP, and proof of address. Some renewals and updates can now be done fully online with a validated email.

What You Need

  • Valid passport (original + copy)
  • Temporary or permanent resident card
  • CURP (we help you obtain or correct it)
  • Proof of address in Mexico (utility bill, ≤ 3 months)
  • Email address registered and validated with SAT
  • Mexican bank account (recommended — most providers require it to invoice you)

Common Questions

How long does the RFC take?

With documents in order, the SAT appointment itself takes about 30–45 minutes and the RFC is issued the same day. The CURP — which comes before it — is usually ready within days of your residency card being stamped. Total realistic timeline: 1–3 weeks.

Do I need an RFC to have a Mexican bank account?

Many banks ask for it, and you definitely need it to be invoiced (facturado) in Mexico, to sign a lease formally, or to run any business activity. If you receive Mexican-source income, the RFC is not optional.

What happens if I never got one and I have income here?

You are required to register if you earn Mexican-source income. Late registration usually means back filings plus possible surcharges — but SAT is generally reasonable for expats who come forward with help. We review your exact situation on the free consult.

Can I get the RFC from the US / before moving?

No — the foreigner RFC requires the Mexican residency card, so it must be done after you are in Mexico. What you CAN do from abroad: gather documents and book the SAT appointment for your first weeks here.
